What should I consider when choosing between an octagon poker table and a Texas Hold Em style table?

August 31, 2008 : Posted by admin

I want to buy a poker table or table top for my husband but know very little about the game. Which is better for playing poker at home with "the guys"? The classic poker table or the oblong Texas Hold Em style table- is it a matter of preference or does the shape of the table actually MEAN something?

I have run a poker club in Arkansas for more than 3 years, and I have found that the closer you can get to a round table the better.

With an octagon, everyone can see the cards well, dealing is easier, and raking chips (winning a hand) is easier.

An oval shaped table makes it tough for the players at the ends to see the cards, to deal the cards, and to rake a pot.

The only way an oval table would be a good use is if the guys had a full-time dealer who sat in the middle of the table and was in control of the game. This rarely happens with "the guys." Usually each person takes turns dealing.

On a side note, I would recommend buying your husband two decks of plastic cards. They last forever! If you spill a liquid on them, they can be wiped off and they will still work! You can even wash them in your dishwasher. They are called "Copag" or "Kem" Cards.

Is there currently any online poker sites where you can play texas holdem for real money in the US?

August 31, 2008 : Posted by admin

I tried last night on titanpoker and it would not let me due to new laws…Does anybody know where I can play holdem' for real money and transfer funds via neteller?

Here is a summary of what is going on with online gambling in the United States.

1) Prior to the passing of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006, eleven states had laws on the books that specifically ban all forms of online gambling. These states are: IL, IN, LA, MI, NJ, NV, NY, OR, SD, WA, WI. Online gambling continues to be considered illegal in these states.

2) The Act did nothing to alter, curtail, or extend state laws regarding online gambling. Thus, it did not make online gambling illegal in all states.

3) The Act places restrictions on the financial transactions that occur in connection with online gambling; it restricts electronic fund transfers and the use of credit cards in connection with such wagering. This means that players can no longer make wagers, or collect winnings using electronic fund transfers, credit or debit cards, or some other online payment systems.

In response to the Act, online gambling sites have done one of three things with respect to US-based real-money players:
1) Continue to accept US-based real-money players from all states
2) Accept US-based real-money players from states other than the states in which online gambling is specifically outlawed (meaning no players from the states listed above)
3) Closed their site to all US-based real-money players

Here is a list of all gaming sites that continue to accept US-based real-money players from all states:

Here is a list of online poker sites that continue to accept US-based real-money players from all states:
http://theonlinecasinogamblingdirectory.com/s.php?as_usa=1&t=Poker&SRC=YahooAnswers

Both of these lists are updated daily as gaming sites establish and publish their policy with respect to US-based real-money players.

Best of luck!
Robert

Does anyone have any tips on how to be a successful Texas Holdem player?

August 31, 2008 : Posted by admin

I have read some books, Harrington on Holdem, David Sklanskys and Mason Malmuths book on limit poker and I have built a pretty solid foundation. What I would like to know is the Tight Agressiive style the best option. I see all of these aggressive players play so wild at times and they make a profit from it. How do I get past the fear of jumping into that style, and would it be profitable in the long run.
I appreciate the practice practice practice response. However Tight Aggressive is a style, its playing very few hands but what hands you do play, you play very agressively. You do need to mix it up a bit because if someone labels you as a rock then the hands you do get involved in people wont play with you because your always playing the nuts. But when you do get a player its a huge payoff. If you play to many hands however people will believe your hand is strong less often. I suppose it is a balance of both, discipline and patience, thank you for your responses.

Generally speaking, tight, aggressive play in limit hold'em is rewarded with consistent gains over the long-term.

When you see the maniacs who are raising and 3-betting with marginal or very weak holdings and making a killing, you should keep in mind that you are often seeing short-term results. In the short-term, any idiot can get lucky and the world's most seasoned player can run bad.

However, this isn't to say that a maniac style cannot be profitable. The swings will be greater, and it demands much more knowledge of your opponents: Who will fold second-best hands and who will go to the showdown with a pair of deuces in the hole? Since you're losing a lot of small bets by raising with more hands, you need to make up for the losses by stealing pots from weak players and raking in huge pots when you do flop the stone-cold nuts.

Feel free to try the maniac style with a single buy-in at a single table and try to analyze your results afterwards.

I prefer to play tight-aggressive, but raise every 2-3 orbits in early position with hands that have potential but aren't normally worth calling 2SB. When you do showdown and win, you'll keep your opponents off-balance.

what is a good book on texas holdem?

August 31, 2008 : Posted by admin

I've been looking for a good book on texas holdem, mainly to find the percentages on hands. Anyone got any ideas?

Not a book as such but probably more productive for you is a piece of software called 'World Class Poker'.

I'll paste the review below - you can get it from Amazon:

World Class Poker - Learn Online Poker From The Best

Don't just learn how to play online poker. Learn what to play, when to play, where and why. With the World Series of Poker 2006 just finished, poker players need to learn how to play better if they're to protect their bankroll.

The saying goes that Texas Hold'em, whether that be land-based or online poker, takes minutes to learn but a lifetime to master. It's certainly true that most people can pick up the game very, very quickly but almost all of them play badly - giving decent players an easy ride at the poker tables.

Online poker players who want to improve their game and start to make serious money at the game usually search the net for advice. Whilst most of these tips are useful, they mostly repeat the same basic information and can only take you so far. To really get your game into top gear you will usually need the help of someone who already knows and plays the game at the highest level and, unless you can afford to pay for the teachings of an WSOP champion who is prepared to share their knowledge, you're going to be out of luck.

This is where a new piece of software for your PC or Mac becomes a vital tool for all online poker players. World Class Poker with TJ Cloutier is a PC/mac-based poker game/tutorial. If you so wish, you can simply play the game as a standard poker game and even take your chances in the World Series of Poker. However, where the software really scores is that it's also a tutorial - a guide to improving your play.

The package contains two CD's filled with in-game expert play recommendations, loads of scenario tips, and numerous quiz questions with thoroughly explained answers, all from the world's top-winning poker player, TJ Cloutier. The replay mode allows you to see all your opponents' hole cards as well as each person's probability to make his or her hand. Includes no limit, limit and satellite tournaments, heads-up play, as well as Texas Hold'em, Omaha, 7 Card Stud, and 5 Card Draw games. The most comprehensive poker strategy tutorial ever created doesn't just teach you how to play Texas Hold'em, you'll learn what to play, when, where, and why.

Click here to get it from Amazon.com, priced $18.98:

Click here to buy World Class Poker from Amazon.co.uk, priced £22.49:

Hope that helps.

What game is prefered by professional poker players Texas hold'em Omaha or Stud?

August 30, 2008 : Posted by admin

What game do the pros play the most? I doubt its hold'em because it is so easy to suffer from a bad beat.

Hold'em is probably the best known game. Most online players start with hold em but progress to different areas. The biggest change I have noticed in recent years is the move towards Omaha High Low.

Most players start with Hold'em because it is the most commonly known game, but when they become a little more experienced, they soon learn that they can profit more at some of the other games where the experience gap is slightly wider.

The HORSE poker tournaments seem to be getting busier. We can see this by looking at the WSOP event. The $50,000 entry will ensure that one day the HORSE poker event will have a bigger prize purse than hold'em in years to come.
